Trust deed, 1819 Sept. 15, Albemarle County, Va.

Jefferson executed this deed to hold off disaster after his friend Wilson Cary Nicholas defaulted on a $20,000 note which Jefferson had endorsed. By the deed, given to Andrew Stevenson and Bernard Peyton and to the Bank of the U.S., Jefferson pledges part of his Poplar Forest estate.

In 1816, the Bank of the United States was rechartered, the first charter having expired in 1811, in an attempt to stabilize the national currency. Within the first three years, the bank was nearly ruined due to mismanagement. Langdon Cheves was elected president of its board of directors in 1819 and restored the bank's credit.
